I am an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, a Catholic priest, and Spiritual Director of DeSales Service Works since the summer of 2008.

I grew up in Northern Virginia, entered the Oblate formation process, studied English at Allentown College (now DeSales University), taught English at North Catholic in Philadelphia and Salesiaum in Wilmington, DE, studied theology at DeSales Hall and religious education at Catholic University, both in DC. I professed final vows in 1998 and was ordained a priest in 1990. For ten years I served as campus minister at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, VA. During that time I also assisted with campus ministry at George Washington University, across the Potomac River in DC. In 2000 I moved to Our Mother of Consolation Parish in Philadelphia for parish and hospital ministry. In 2006 I worked with Oblate novices in the Bronx. At the completion of that year, Holy Infant Parish in Durham, NC, welcomed me as pastor.

It has been great leading DSW, welcoming groups to experience working in Camden and sharing Salesian spirituality and gospel values with all the groups who come to serve. People often observed that those who serve get as much out of the experience as those who are served; I find that to be very true for myself. It is great to be a part of this positive Oblate enterprise of doing good works and learning from one another.

A graduate of Virginia Tech in 2010, I moved to Camden for year-long volunteering with DSW. I had an amazing experience working at Hopeworks for a year, getting to know the city and the youth in the program. Since then, I have held several jobs in the non-profit world in Camden, including the homeless shelter Joseph’s House and Cooper’s Ferry Partnership. I also traveled to the Oblate community in Benin in west Africa in the spring of 2013 to live and serve with the parish there.

Wilmington Service Coordinator-  Zachary Ryan

Upon graduating from Florida State University in 2008, I returned to my alma mater Bishop Verot Catholic High School to serve for three years as the Christian Service Coordinator. This blessed me with two opportunities to bring student groups to Camden, NJ to work and learn with DSW and the community there. Since then I have continued working in the service learning field at Salesianum High School in Wilmington, DE. I have been gifted with the extraordinary job of connecting young people with the social justice issues that need their innovative solutions, prayer, and compassion. Over these six amazing years as volunteer coordinator I have been a part of over 100 service retreats and mission trips in Florida, New Jersey, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Delaware in addition to two very impactful and humbling trips to Haiti.
